Ba Trai Dao

Ba Trai Dao means 'three peaches', after three rounded limestone islets that shelter a small beach in Lan Ha Bay. It is one of the prettiest swim stops in the bay, but you need the tide on your side.

Short answer

Visit on a Lan Ha Bay tour or private boat, around low to mid tide when the sand is exposed. Bring water shoes and a swimsuit, and expect company at midday.

01The place

Three islets stand close together, enclosing a calm patch of water and a short strip of pale sand. Because the islets block the wind and waves, the water is usually flat here even when the open bay is choppy, which makes it good for swimming and easy kayaking.

02The legend

Local storytelling links the three islets to three fairies who descended to the bay and stayed too long, turning into the rounded hills that look like peaches. Versions differ from guide to guide, which is part of the fun.

03Tides matter

At high tide the beach shrinks to almost nothing or disappears under water, while at low tide a wide spit of sand emerges. Good operators plan the visit for the right time; if you are hiring a private boat, mention it when you agree the route.
