Short answer
Spend at least one full day on a boat in Lan Ha Bay, with a couple of hours of kayaking. Depart from Ben Beo pier, go on a weekday if you can, and choose a smaller boat for more time on the water and less in queues.
01What you will see
- Karst islands. Sheer limestone towers covered in scrub and trees, many with undercut notches carved by the tides.
- Lagoons. Enclosed pools reached through low cave arches or narrow gaps, often only passable by kayak and only at certain tides.
- Fish farms and floating houses. Wooden rafts with cages for grouper, sea bass and shellfish, the main local industry. Cai Beo is the largest cluster.
- Small beaches. Pocket coves of sand and shell such as Van Boi and Ba Trai Dao, used as swim stops.
- Wildlife. Kingfishers, sea eagles, jellyfish in some seasons, and with great luck a Cat Ba langur on a cliff.
02Choosing a trip
| Type | Duration | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget group tour | 6–8 h | Low prices, social | Big boats, crowded stops, short kayak time |
| Small-group premium tour | 6–8 h | More kayaking, better food | Higher price, book ahead |
| Private local boat | 3–6 h | Families, own pace | Agree route and fee clearly |
| Overnight cruise | 2 days, 1 night | Sunset, sunrise, quiet anchorage | Weather cancellations |
Read reviews from the last few months rather than relying on star ratings, and ask how many guests the boat carries and how long you will actually spend in a kayak.
03A typical day on the water
08:00–08:30
Pick-up from your hotel and transfer to Ben Beo pier.
Morning
Cruise past Cai Beo and the fish farms into the bay, then kayak through a cave arch into a lagoon.
Lunch
Seafood and rice on board while the boat moves to a quieter area.
Afternoon
Swim stop at a beach, a second kayak session or a visit to Monkey Island or Ba Trai Dao.
Late afternoon
Return to Ben Beo around 16:00–17:00.
04Swimming and water quality
The water in Lan Ha Bay is calm and warm in summer, but it is not crystal clear. Sediment and plankton give it a green colour and visibility is usually a few metres at best. Near the floating farms it can be murky, and plastic and polystyrene floats still wash up in places, although clean-ups have improved things. Swim at the beach stops rather than next to the fish farms. More honest detail in Swimming.
05Tides and timing
Many lagoons and caves are only accessible at mid to low tide, when the arches are not flooded, and some beaches shrink or disappear at high tide. Good operators plan the route around the tide table, which is why the order of stops can change from day to day. Early starts beat the midday wave of boats from Ha Long and Hai Phong.
