Short answer

Base yourselves in town or at the Cat Co coves, choose short boat trips with child-size life jackets, visit Cannon Fort and Hospital Cave, and keep long hikes and midday sun to a minimum. A pushchair is of limited use.

01What children enjoy most

  • Boat days. Choose a shorter Lan Ha Bay trip (four to five hours) with a beach stop. Double kayaks let a parent paddle with a child.
  • Cannon Fort. Old guns, tunnels and big views, with a short uphill walk or an electric cart from town.
  • Hospital Cave. A real wartime hospital inside a hill, with rooms to explore. Some sections are dark, so bring a torch.
  • Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 3. Small beaches close to town with cafés, toilets and calm water on most summer days.
  • Cai Beo. Floating houses, fish farms and the odd dog barking from a raft. Usually part of a bay tour.
  • Squid fishing. An early-evening summer trip that older children love. Ask for a short one.

02Things to watch

  • Life jackets. Ask in advance for child sizes. Many boats only carry adult jackets.
  • Monkeys. On Monkey Island the macaques snatch food and bags and can bite. Keep snacks out of sight and children close.
  • Heat. June to August is very hot and humid. Plan outings for the morning and late afternoon.
  • Hills and steps. Town is built on slopes and many paths have steps. A baby carrier beats a pushchair.
  • Traffic. Pavements are narrow or blocked by parked scooters. Hold hands on the harbour road.

03Where families stay

Families with small children usually prefer the Cat Co area or the quieter hillside streets in town, close to the beaches and restaurants. Resorts with pools and a kids' club make hot afternoons easier. Bungalows in the Hung Son valley offer gardens and pools but need a car or taxi for everything. See Beach & island resorts and Bungalows & eco-lodges.

04Food for fussy eaters

Fried rice, noodle soup, grilled chicken, spring rolls and fresh fruit are everywhere, and most tourist restaurants have Western dishes. Supermarkets in town sell nappies, formula, snacks and UHT milk, though the choice of brands is limited.

?Questions people ask

Is Cat Ba safe for children?

Generally yes. The main risks are traffic, the sun, the sea and the monkeys, all manageable with normal care.

Can toddlers go on Lan Ha Bay boat trips?

Yes, on calm days and with your own well-fitting life jacket if you have one. Choose larger, steadier boats and skip kayaking with very young children.

Can kids hike in the national park?

The short Kim Giao forest trail suits school-age children. The climb to Ngu Lam Peak is steep and rocky, better for confident walkers of about eight and up.
