01What Cat Ba boats can reach
Boats licensed in Hai Phong operate mainly in Lan Ha Bay. Some routes run north to the area where Lan Ha meets Ha Long, which looks much the same: karst islands, caves and floating farms. Operating rules between the two provinces have changed over the years, so the exact routes allowed vary. If seeing Ha Long Bay by name matters to you, ask the operator which areas the trip enters.
02The famous Ha Long sights
Ha Long's best-known stops, such as Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top Island and the main cruise anchorages, sit in the central part of the bay near Ha Long city and Tuan Chau. Day trips from Cat Ba rarely reach them. To see them, cross to Tuan Chau on the Gia Luan ferry and join a day cruise from Ha Long, or take an overnight cruise that starts there.
