Cat BaIsland & Lan Ha Bay guide

07Essentials

Travelling responsibly

Cat Ba's beauty is fragile. Plastic, sewage, overfishing and crowds put pressure on the bay, and the island's langurs survive only because they are protected. Small choices by visitors add up.

Short answer

Refuse single-use plastic, choose operators that respect protected areas and limit group sizes, never buy wildlife products, and spend your money with local families.

01Plastic and waste

Floating farms have long used polystyrene floats that break up into the sea, and authorities have pushed farmers towards sturdier materials. Bottles, bags and food containers from tourism add to the problem. Carry a refillable bottle, refuse plastic bags and straws, and take your rubbish back from beaches and boats.

02Choosing operators

  • Small groups and fewer boats at each stop
  • Respect for closed conservation areas and kayaking rules
  • Proper waste management on board
  • Fair pay for local crew and guides
  • No feeding of wildlife

03Wildlife

The Cat Ba langur survives because of strict protection. Never seek out langurs by boat or drone, respect signs and closed areas, and never buy wildlife products. Avoid restaurants advertising wild meat or protected species.

04Supporting local life

  • Stay in family-run homestays and guesthouses
  • Hire local guides for hikes
  • Buy local honey, fish sauce and handicrafts
  • Ask permission before taking photos of people and homes
