Cat BaIsland & Lan Ha Bay guide

01Plan

Cat Ba in January

January is deep winter on the Gulf of Tonkin. The island is green and peaceful, the air is cool and damp, and you may have a viewpoint all to yourself.

01Weather

Days usually reach the high teens and nights drop to around 14 °C, which feels colder in the damp sea air. Rainfall is low in volume but drizzle and overcast skies are common, and sunny spells come and go with the northeast monsoon. Hotel rooms rarely have heating, so a fleece is useful indoors too.

02On the water

Boat trips into Lan Ha Bay still run on most days and the bay is calm and almost empty. Bring a windproof jacket for the deck. Kayaking is pleasant if you stay dry; swimming is only for the hardy, with the sea around 19–20 °C.
