Short answer
Book a guided half or full day with a local climbing operator. Beginners usually go to Butterfly Valley; deep water soloing runs on warm days at suitable tides. Expect roughly 1–1.6 million VND for a half day and more for deep water soloing.
01Butterfly Valley
A quiet valley in the island's interior with bolted limestone walls up to about 30 metres. Routes range from easy beginner climbs to hard overhangs, and the forest setting keeps it shady for part of the day. Guided trips include transport, equipment and instruction.
02Deep water soloing
Lan Ha Bay is famous for deep water soloing: climbing without ropes above deep water and falling into the sea when you let go. Operators take small groups by boat to suitable walls, timed with the tide so the water below is deep enough. It is exhilarating and should only be done with experienced local guides who know the safe walls.
03Climbing and conservation
Some cliffs in the area are home to the endangered Cat Ba langur and are closed to climbing. Reputable operators respect these closures. Ask your operator how they handle conservation rules before you book.
04Seasons
For sport climbing, the cooler, drier months from October to April give better friction. Summer is hot and humid, with wet rock after storms, but it is the season for deep water soloing when the sea is warm.
