Short answer

Allow a full day for roughly 60–80 km. Ride north via Hospital Cave and the national park, continue towards the northern piers, return along the west coast through Xuan Dam and finish at Cannon Fort for sunset.

01The route

  1. Cat Ba Town to Hospital Cave

Climb out of town along the main road north. Stop at Hospital Cave about 10 km in.

  2. National park

Continue to the headquarters for Ngu Lam Peak and Trung Trang Cave.

  3. North to Gia Luan

Ride through the hills towards the northern tip, with views over Ha Long Bay near the Gia Luan pier.

  4. West towards Phu Long

Back to the junction and west towards Cai Vieng and Phu Long, where the cable car crosses the strait.

  5. The west coast

South along the west side through the Xuan Dam area for a beach stop.

  6. Back to town

Rejoin the main road and end the day at Cannon Fort.

02Road conditions

Roads are paved but narrow, steep and full of bends. Buses and trucks use the main road, especially around ferry arrival times. After storms, expect debris and gravel; in winter, fog and drizzle make the surface slick.

03Practical tips

  • Start early and carry water and snacks
  • Fill up in town before leaving
